Raphael painted this altarpiece around 1504/5 for the Franciscan convent of Sant’ Antonio in Perugia. It hung in a part of the church reserved for the nuns, who may have insisted on its conservative details, such as the elaborately clothed Christ Child. By contrast, the weighty male saints look to the future—the recent works by Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Bartolomeo that Raphael had just begun to study in Florence. The nuns sold their altarpiece in 1678, and in the early twentieth century its purchase by J. Pierpont Morgan received clamorous press coverage. The version of the artpiece was made with the absolute size: Main panel, overall 67 7/8 x 67 7/8 in (172,4 x 172,4 cm), painted surface 66 3/4 x 66 1/2 in (169,5 x 168,9 cm); lunette, overall 29 1/2 x 70 7/8 in (74,9 x 180 cm), painted surface 25 1/2 x 67 1/2 in (64,8 x 171,5 cm). Oil and gold on wood was used by the Italian artist as the technique for the artwork. This artwork can be viewed in in the art collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The painter Raphael was a European artist, whose art style can primarily be assigned to High Renaissance. The Italian artist was born in 1483 and died at the age of 37 in 1520.
