The model was previously identified as the portrait of Madame Denis, daughter of Catherine Arouet, wife Mignot, Voltaire's sister, Marie Louise Mignot was the subject of a special attachment to his uncle. After the death of her husband, Charles Nicolas Denis, she came to live with Voltaire, who made his housekeeper; their relationship soon became amorous and lasted, with ups and downs, until the death of the writer. When she entered the Carnavalet museum, the work going on to represent the actor Le Kain (1728-1778) in female costume. Mr. Olafur Thorvaldsson, art historian, has identified the painting as a portrait of Mrs. Ducreux, the mother of the artist, by analogy with a past pastel for sale at Piasa in December 2015 (see work documents and Jeffares, 2015).
