The depiction of the holy family with Saint John the Baptist is a common subject of devotional painting in Europe and the Americas. Here the holy family is set against a nocturnal landscape illuminated by the profusion of gold that radiates from the Virgin’s head. The work is endowed with a great sense of dynamism, but also intimacy and tenderness meant to instill devotion. Early representations show Saint Joseph as a bearded old man, but after the Counter Reformation (and especially in Spain where his cult was amply promoted), he was frequently depicted as a virile younger man. In this painting, Saint Joseph appears older, most likely the result of the source used by the artist.
