The social scene "The Rich Man" refers to the first part of the parable of the rich man and Lazarus (Lk. 16, 19-21). In contrast to the literary source but the beggars will not wait patiently for his alms, but he steps over the threshold of demanding wealthy home. This exceeding of the limits triggers a wide variety of reactions of the sitter. So is a contemporary genre picture from the religious history painting. Two years later, Danhauser the story in the painting "The Monastery soup" continued. Former glutton is now itself become a beggar and coincides with the Armenausspeisung with that character he has ignored in good days and maybe even expelled. This seems to have forgiven him and is willing to share his bread with him. A connection of the pair of images to Ferdinand Raimund's magic game "The Spendthrift" (premiered in 1834) has already been made by Danhauser contemporaries. Likewise, it was recognized even then that the story is similar to the socio-critical image sequences by the English painter William Hogarth (1697 to 1764).
