This idealized landscape somewhat melancholy explores the theme of poetic ruins put fashionable by Claude Lorrain and La Hyre. This is one of the few paintings attributed with certainty to Mauperché, one of the best French landscape in the middle of siècle.L'artiste depicts an ancient architectural fancy, overgrown and lively picturesque details, pots flowers on a ledge, laundry to be dried, pulley, the edge of a marsh traveled reflets.Les dark values rushes and dead branches in the foreground is thinned gradually towards diaphanous far, according to the rules of the perspective aérienne.Les figures with slender figures could represent the shepherd Theagenes collecting Chariclea the Nile, a scene from the famous novel of Heliodorus, "the Ethiopiques".
This table is part of the rare works attributed with certainty to Mauperché. The painter made the trip to Italy from 1634 to 1639.
