What does the original artwork description of the Belvedere state about the 18th century work of art from the painter Franz Anton Maulbertsch? (© - Belvedere - Belvedere)
In 1750, a competition was at the academy after a break of four years organized, emerged from the Maulbertsch winner in the painting. The theme given and participants were known research through archival sources for a long time, but the award-winning painting itself was lost. Thanks Anton Weinmann, head one even knew about the dimensions of communication as well as to himself that the image must have been in 1783 in the Academy. Finally, it appeared in private hands, and the Belvedere was fortunately acquire 1,997 this sensational discovery. The call text preserved in the archives of the Academy of Fine Arts, on which the submitted work if possible had to orient, was probably written by the elderly Academy Director Jacob van Schuppen and comes here almost an image description the same. The "theme for the Praemia in Mahlerey 1750" is a "Allegoria, or allusive idea of Keyserin sitting under the guise of Minerva with their Attributis or properties". At her feet, the allegorical figure of the Academy seated "with a golden cron on the general" and holding in his right hand a file with a looped around her paper on which "Detrahit atque polit" (She takes off and smoothes) is written. In her left hand she holds a "Cranz of laurel, ebheu [Ivy] and myrtle," depend from the two pomegranates. bottom left is playing a monkey with lying on the ground books. In addition, a total of five putti to see those which are the left, right and bottom edges of architecture, sculpture and painting. To the left of Minerva is a cherub with a cornucopia, "from which all sorts Schäze, fruits, gold chains, gold and silver coins, and Edlgestein do well," he reaches the goddess to be awarded medals. In turn, floats a cherub, who also blows the fame with the trombone. All the elements mentioned in the tender can be found in Maulbertsch's painting again. Only the figure of Minerva is to bring in no visible connection with the former empress. To illustrate this passage literally, and a masked ruler would play was probably not quite appropriate. The only direct reference to Mary Theresa is the - faded today - flag with the imperial arms on trombone of the putto. Especially the lighting situation, this painting is a paradigmatic early for Maulbertsch's work: the gleaming light appears to come simultaneously from multiple sources are in the image and selectively blaze. In this respect, and with regard to the color design and the attitude of each main character is the image of "Susanna before the judges" (Inv 3224) very close. [Georg Lechner, 10/2009]
