The 15th century artwork was made by the high renaissance master Andrea Mantegna. The beyond 520 year old original was painted with the size of 22 1/2 x 18 in (57,2 x 45,7 cm). Distemper on canvas was used by the Italian painter as the technique for the artwork. This work of art is in the the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, New York, United States of America. The alignment is in portrait format and has a side ratio of 1 : 1.2, meaning that the length is 20% shorter than the width. Andrea Mantegna was a male painter of Italian nationality, whose art style can mainly be attributed to High Renaissance. The Italian artist lived for 76 years - born in the year 1430 in Padova province, Veneto, Italy and died in 1506.

The composition of this late picture by Mantegna was inspired by Roman funerary reliefs, which accounts for the combination of austerity and sweetness. It is painted in distemper rather than oil, allowing the artist to give strong definition to the forms. Originally, the colors would have had a freshness and clarity. However, the picture has suffered from past cleanings and its surface has been varnished, compromising the intended effect. Mantegna painted for the elite Gonzaga court in Mantua, where the antiquarian culture informing this picture would have been appreciated.
