One of the most talented artists of the Connecticut school, Moulthrop must have acquired his obvious knowledge of English portraiture by studying books and prints. His exaggerated portrayal of Mrs. Perit's coiffure and headdress is in keeping with similar images in contemporary fashion plates. He may also have studied paintings by Ralph Earl, whose works can also be seen in the Museum's collection.

In 1790 the male American artist Reuben Moulthrop made the classic art work of art Sally Sanford Perit. The more than 230 year old original version was painted with the dimensions: 36 1/4 x 29 3/4 in (92,1 x 75,6 cm). Oil on canvas was used by the North American painter as the technique for the masterpiece. What is more, the artwork forms part of the art collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
