The Cloister Notre Dame current Quai aux Fleurs, seen from the Quai d'Orleans on the Ile Saint Louis, the current 4th district. Urban landscape. In the foreground, the Seine boats. In the background the island of the city with gardens and houses of the cloister of Notre Dame, and the extreme right, the end of the Red Bridge. You can see the head and the towers of Notre Dame.
The Cloister Notre Dame was a group of houses where lived the canons of Notre Dame, it was a real small town quite apart, surrounded by a wall with its streets, houses and gardens. The canons had a large garden at the tip of the island which was a former island of rubbish attached to the city. (See J. Hillairet. History of the streets of Paris, volume I, p.305) .We called "Notre Dame cloister" neighborhood, surrounded by a wall, which remained the canons of Notre Dame. Access was through four doors and it was forbidden to women.
