Especially in the artistic conquest of the division, the Austrian landscape painting of the 19th century has created its most outstanding achievements. Traditions of this rich heritage are intertwined with Schiele's "Four Trees" with the nervous uniqueness of the painter. The partially defoliated chestnut avenue that does not lead into the depths, but side by side aligned parallel image of four trees, is probably the most beautiful landscape painting in the late works by Schiele. The evening heavy sky as the setting sun retreats into the atmospheric image depth, contrasts with the symbolic, towering trees. The stresses symmetrical repetition of the trees got Schiele in the so-called parallelism of the Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler know, most appreciated the Schiele as a model by Gustav Klimt. In the reddish evening light of each color strip wins from the landscape, especially but the sky is constructed in its colorful Kleinteiligkeit one the area filling life of its own, making the picture despite the expressivity in the use of line and color of its origin according to the decorative principles of the Vienna Art style points. Nothing characterizes the Viennese Art Nouveau more than the ubiquitous tendency to regard each pixel as part of an ornamental basic pattern. Above all, the autumn landscape condensed into a symbol elegiac melancholy Zuständlichkeit whose magic is also the famous local cityscapes Schiele.
