Probably the most impressive representation of the arduous life of the peasantry is "the depleted force." None of Waldmüller's paintings has a comparable realism, a comparable unvarnished statement of reality. The parlor is lit only by the glow of a candle falling on the happy sleeping toddler. On the ground, but it is hardly noticeable that collapsed from exhaustion mother. This pure state portrayal triggers concern. A similar profundity reaches Waldmüller before or since.
