Rudolf von Alt studied from 1825 at the Vienna Academy, among others Josef Mössmer (1780 to 1845), but his real teacher was his father Jacob Alt (from 1789 to 1872), in whose studio he had worked as a child. From 1824 took father and son long walks through Austria and northern Italy, built on it numerous watercolors of cityscapes and landscapes. 1835 she led a trip to the south of Italy. The result was should serve a large number of watercolors, which, however, were not intended for sale, but the paintings executed in oil as a study. The southern sun, the intensity of the twenty-three Rudolf Alt here saw for the first time, was not without effect in the implementation on the sheet: Shadows suddenly received color, purple were tinted or blue.
