Jan van Goyen painted numerous views of the fishing village of Egmond aan Zee, whose ruined church is visible just beyond dunes. Fishing boats are being unloaded on the beach, where the catch is sorted and piled onto carts. Such beaches were a favorite destination of Dutch city dwellers for whom watching the activities of the fishing fleets was a popular leisure activity. The restricted monochrome tonality of this painting, typical of Van Goyen's works of the 1630s, properly evokes the humid atmosphere of the Dutch North Sea coast.
