Luitpold of Bavaria was named Regent in June 1886, after his nephew, King Ludwig II, was declared mentally incompetent. During the twenty-six years of Luitpold's reign, Bavaria prospered, and Munich became a cultural capital of Europe. At the time Lenbach created this work, he was the most famous portrait painter in Germany.

Besides this, the alignment of the digital reproduction is portrait with a side ratio of 1 : 1.2, which means that the length is 20% shorter than the width. The painter Franz von Lenbach was a European artist from Germany, whose style was primarily Realism. The European artist was born in 1836 in Schrobenhausen and passed away at the age of 68 in 1904 in Munich.
