"The paintings of this master are highly regarded; they are rarely seen [...] Hackaert often treated with great talent departures or returns hunting along a pond or canal bordered of large trees. "(Eugène Dutuit) In the light of a setting sun, a couple of riders involved in falconry, one of the favorite activities of the aristocracy of the time. This theme of the hunt, which meets its audience at the end of the sixteenth century, Jan Hackaert treated her repeatedly. It is in the table of the Petit Palais that seems to have defined a archétype.Il gives the hunting scene a pleasant character and entertainment. The forest takes his brush look like a walk, underlined by a row of ash trees arranged along a stretch of water on which reflect a golden light echoing footsteps as the sun draws in the sky. Alley ash trees, whose composition is structured by the slenderness of trees, boosted by the curve of the path and led by the vibrations of the rising sun reminds us that Hackaert is a perfect representative of the group of Dutch painters of Italianate landscapes. the figures that determine the subject of the table and open the way to the anecdotal, are the work of Adriaen van de Velde, who often collaborated with Hackaert. "A Driveway in the Forest" (Wallace Collection, London), executed some years later, is the fruit of cooperation and testimony door of fortune that met the board of the Petit Palais.

During the first half of the eighteenth century, the painting was in the collection of Dr. Bragge, who sold it in London March 21, 1751 (No. 46), at a price of 18.6 pounds. A few years later, he was in Amsterdam, in the collection of Frans van de Velde, and was sold September 7, 1774 for 133 guilders (sale Amsterdam Ploos van Amstel ... Schut, No. 38) .The March 1787, it appeared in a Paris sale (Paillet & Boileau, No. 155, sold 350 pounds). "Alley ash trees" effected a brief stint in the Finance Controller collection Charles Alexandre de Calonne, who sold it for 501 pounds Lerouge, 21 April 1788 (sales Paris, Lebrun, No. 108). The painting was sold a while. The pair passed into the collection of merchant tables, Vincent Donjeux, on sale April 29, 1793 (sales Paris, Lebrun & Paillet, No. 264). On this occasion, Munier acquired two tables for 1155 frs.C'est in Amsterdam that found the canvas Hackaert in the early nineteenth century, as it appears in the sale "Van Helsleuter" which is, however, held in Paris on 25 January 1802 (Paillet & Delaroche, No. 65). Descamps acquired it in 1510 for frs.Puis she joined the prestigious collection of Cardinal Joseph Fesch, Ambassador of France to the Holy See, Grand Chaplain of the Empire and archbishop of Lyon, Paris and Rome. The work was sold in Rome on 17 and 18 March 1845 (sales Rome, George, No. 92). Augustus Dutuit acquired it for 3,350 francs (610 scudi) and brought the table to Rouen, to be included in the collection that he had made with his brother Eugene.
