Mieris, during his lifetime, had a great vogue which was maintained all through the eighteenth century. From the late nineteenth century, it undergoes, however disaffection that reached all fijnschilders - "precious painters" - Leiden school of which he is one of the brightest représentants.Cette painting innuendos gallant, which combine as often in Holland in the seventeenth century, love and music, represents the artist and his wife, Cunera van der Cock (1629/1630 - 1700). It also illustrates the theme of the five sens.Ayant belonged to Count Charles de Perregaux, the painting was sold by his heirs, including his son Edward who ruined himself to maintain the beautiful Marie Duplesssis. One can imagine what proceeds allowed to offer camellias at the famous courtesan. The two lovers were used as models to Alexandre Dumas son for heroes, Armand Duval and Marguerite Gautier, in his novel, "The Lady of the Camellias".
