On the occasion of the anniversary of the revolution of July, July 28, 1835, Louis-Philippe was to review the National Guard on major boulevards in the company of three of his son, the Duke of Orleans and Nemours the Prince de Joinville. Fieschi, housed by Republican friends, Boulevard du Temple, conceived an "infernal machine" made of twenty-five guns juxtaposed guns which was placed on the support of a window and was to fire the king's passing. The explosion of the craft, which wounded Fieschi himself in the head, touched neither the king nor his son, but killed instantly Mortier and ten other people. Among the dozens of wounded seven died the following day. There were a total of 18 dead and 42 wounded. The attack provoked a wave of indignation across Europe and helped to cast aspersions on the Republican Party.
