This painting belongs to a series of works by Cornelis Bega produced at the end of his life, from 1660. It is a different style scenes of peasants usually associated with his name. The female model that is found in other works by the painter might be his companion. The subject of the painting and the objects represented are, as often in Dutch painting of the time, holders of multiple evocations. In the seventeenth century, a couple of musicians could have an erotic meaning, music distilling melancholy through comforting sounds. Here, the lute player that usually accompanies the singer was replaced by a violinist.
