The subject is taken from the Acts of the Apostles, chap. XIV. Saint Paul having healed a lame man in the city of Lystra, in the presence of witnesses, they took him to the god Mercury, while his companion, Barnabas was identified as Jupiter. They brought a bull for their sacrifice; the two saints opposed and exhorted them to forget their superstitions and worship the one God.
The "mays" are the large paintings in evangelical subjects, ordered every year (between 1630 and 1707) by the corporation of Parisian goldsmiths and offered May 1 at the Notre Dame Cathedral. The "may" 1644 is preserved in the Museum of Arras. Table Carnavalet museum has many differences with the definitive work.
