illustration possible of the Victor Hugo novel "Claude Gueux" corresponding to the text of the first paragraph: "There are seven or eight years, a man named Claude Gueux, poor laborer, lived in Paris He had with him a girl who was his mistress. and a child of that girl. I say things as they are, leaving the pick moralities as player that made the sow on their way. the worker was capable, clever, intelligent, strong abused by education, very well treated by nature, can not read and knowing thinking. One winter, the book failed. no fire, no bread in the attic. the man, the girl and the child were cold and hungry. the man robbed. I do not know what he stole, I do not know where he stole. what I know is that this flight there resulted three days of bread and fire for the woman and child, and five years in prison for man. "
The Museum keeps the receipt for the sum of 400 francs paid by Paul Meurice May 5, 1903 "for a guaranteed Rioult table, Claude Gueux" .Although the receipt explicitly mention the novel by Victor Hugo, Paul Meurice and his successors mention not this painting in the iconographic note of the edition called the national Printing Office (library Ollendorff) 1910, nor among the works of furniture, or from that of the Victor Hugo House, which is surprising. Paul Meurice he ended up doubting that this painting actually depicts the story of Victor Hugo? Indeed at the Salon of 1834, Rioult exposes as No. 1649, "Misery" whose description in the booklet partially corresponds to our table: "Without work, a whole destitution, in winter, a family man, in despair, stole a loaf; he gives his wife .... In the background, the Commissioner led by the baker. "Now this last detail is missing in the painting of the museum. So we must ask whether the work of the museum is the one that was exhibited at the Salon. This in any case, can not be an illustration of "Claude Gueux" since the show opening on March 1, 1834, the painting is prior to the publication of "Claude Gueux" July 6 in "The Paris Review" and volume in September, or even a part of his writing in two phase (September 1832 to June 1834). Given the difference between the fabric of the museum and the description of the book, one can, however, ask whether the publication of Victor Hugo's story would have suggested to the painter to make an echo alternative to it, this free version Commissioner baker or longer according to the first paragraph of the book. The taste Rioult for subjects taken from literary works makes this plausible hypothesis. We can not, however, speculate that Rioult has for its source where Victor Hugo himself had discovered the affair as No. 2059 of 19 and 20 March 1832 "La Gazette des courts" do reports that the murder supervisor of Clairvaux, not the initial flight of the bread. Simple allegory of poverty through a genre scene or truly inspired work of Victor Hugo's story, this painting, made the same year "Claude Gueux" do this no less a singular resonance with the book that would testify so the immediate influence of Hugo's work on the iconography of the romantic school. Louis Edward Rioult is also related to the environment of the Place Royale, where live Victor Hugo, as his workshop, that Theophile Gautier attended, was located rue Saint-Antoine.
