Softness of colors, neutral expression and vast landscape of animated figures, the following recurring items of aristocratic portraits by Jan Mostaert, painter at the court of the regent Margaret of Austria, from 1519 to 1529.Joost van Bronkhorst, lord Bleywick-the-Delft and master accounts Count of Holland in the Hague, is represented with the seriousness of its duties. Some details such as the restless fingers and the slight wrinkling his right eye gives this portrait a less fixed and characteristic aspect of the animation portraits sixteenth siècle.L'arrière plan, witnessed the exchange between old Netherlands and Italy, face a vast landscape that has nothing to envy to those of a Patinir whose Mostaert should know the works. Two riders seem to go hunting, and on the hills face a castle. Is it the domain of our Lord? It is not known for this portrait, which explains the very front angle view on which was painted Joost van Bronkhorst. However, the "Portrait of a Woman" (Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum) could, although its dimensions are different, making it "during" the landscape as the curve of the clouds and the framing of the model are continuous.
The table was in Brussels, in the collection of Count Oultremont. He remained in the collections of the Oultremont-Schagen family until 22 May 1877 when it was sold to Paris, Hôtel Drouot (No. 9). He appeared in the Rothan collection, in Paris, at least from 1883 and was then assigned to Christopher Amberger. The 29-30-31 May 1890, the panel went on sale in Paris, Galerie Georges Petit (Rothan sales, No. 1) and may have been purchased by Mr. Hainauer, since it presented the painting in its collection Berlin soon 1891.Enfin, at an unknown date, the portrait has joined the collection of Edward and Julia Tuck, who made a gift to the City of Paris in 1921. the painting has joined the collections of the Petit Palais in 1930.
