This bust-length depiction of a bearded man with an axe may be identified as Matthias, the last of the apostles, chosen to take the place of Judas after his betrayal of Christ. Piazzetta, one of the defining figures of eighteenth-century Italian art, made several series of apostles, drawn and painted, to which this painting may have belonged. These had considerable influence through engravings by Marco Pitteri, which the French artist Fragonard admired in a print shop in Venice in 1774.
