The sitter is Joseph Amerling, the younger brother of the painter. But the boy but is not shown Himself, was "made" by the loose-fitting clothes and utensils for fishing boys - so he has taken a role in the picture, a portrait of intent can not be excluded due to the unique characterization of the face. Amerling had met the type of role portraits during his stay in England 1827/1828.
