Victor Hugo Guernsey, background sky and cloud, is shown leaning on a rock, his head resting on his left hand, the right crept into his waistcoat.
The agenda of Victor Hugo recorded in the February 9, the posing session: "I asked all afternoon for the portrait that made me Mr. Chifflart - he gave me four drawings". It is unlikely that Chifflart has painted a portrait of this format during the stay he made in Guernsey while working in illustration of the novel "Toilers of the Sea". Based on a photograph preserved in the archives of the museum, Pierre Georgel suggests that this version is very different from that which was presented at the Salon of 1868: "507. - Portrait of Victor Hugo" .This version remained in the studio of the artist, the portrait went to his legacy after his death in 1901. It was acquired one year by Paul Meurice. The museum's archives contain a letter from A. Chifflart Paul Meurice dated 28 January 1902 indicating that it has lowered the price of the portrait in 3000 Fr and a receipt of the same, dated October 6, 1902, the sum 1 200 Gb for the purchase of the table. It was presented from the accrcohage the museum, in the second chamber of intimate museum on the third floor.
