In the sixteenth century, "The Loves of the Gods" was a theme much appreciated by sponsors, but also by artists. Indeed, tapping into the mythological repertoire gave them an excuse to paint female nudes and to produce works with affirmed eroticism without incurring the wrath of censorship. Mars has laid down his arms and tenderly embraces Venus whose eyes are on a small love that bites an arrow. The latter looks the visitor to make it witnessed the scene. This type of paint was often offered at a wedding and allow the comparison of the young couple love with those dieux.On recognize here the brush Bernardino Lanino its soft touch and velvety, and especially its characters willing under a canopy red and green, which are found in many of his paintings, such as "Madonna and Child with saints and donors" (Raleigh, North Carolina Museum of Art), for example.

In the early twentieth century, the painting was in the collection of Charles Vincent Ocampo, who donated it to the City of Paris, subject to usufruct in 1931. He renounced the usufruct in 1942.
