The Agony in the Garden is a common theme in medieval and early modern religious art. According to the Gospels, Jesus took a walk to pray in the garden of Gethsemane after the Last Supper, accompanied by the Apostles Peter, John and James. As he walked, Jesus was overwhelmed by a feeling of deep sadness. He prayed, and was visited by an angel who strengthened him; the disciples, meanwhile, fell asleep. (Text: Emily Wilkinson)
