Rembrandt had a large studio with many pupils who emulated his style and even his signature. As a result, fierce debate about the authorship of his paintings continues today. This work was universally attributed to Rembrandt until scholars "demoted" it in 1982, arguing that the rendering of space, texture, and anatomy suggests a skillful imitation by an unknown artist. In the absence of documentation or conclusive evidence from technical analysis, the debate goes on.

In the year 1658 the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn painted the work of art "Portrait of a Man (The Auctioneer)". The 360 year old artwork was painted with the size: 42 3/4 x 34 in (108,6 x 86,4 cm). Oil on canvas was used by the European artist as the technique for the work of art. Today, this work of art can be viewed in in the The Metropolitan Museum of Art's digital art collection. We are glad to mention that the artpiece, which belongs to the public domain is included with courtesy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Bequest of Benjamin Altman, 1913. : Bequest of Benjamin Altman, 1913. Moreover, alignment of the digital reproduction is portrait and has a side ratio of 1 : 1.2, meaning that the length is 20% shorter than the width. Rembrandt van Rijn was a male painter, whose style can be attributed mainly to Baroque. The European artist was born in the year 1606 in Leiden and died at the age of 63 in the year 1669.
