This landscape by Fitz Henry Lane depicts the Annisquam River near Gloucester, Massachusetts, where the artist lived for much of his life. Cows graze serenely in the foreground, while at left a man, likely Lane himself, carefully sketches the view. The train in the background records the Eastern Railroad’s new Gloucester line, completed the previous year. The railroad made the region rapidly accessible from Boston, facilitating a boom in tourism and trade.

New England Inlet with Self-Portrait was by the American artist Fitz Henry Lane in 1848. The 170 years old work of art was painted with the size: 17 3/4 x 25 7/8 in (45,1 x 65,7 cm). Oil on canvas was applied by the artist as the technique for the artwork. Nowadays, the piece of art belongs to the Yale University Art Gallery's digital art collection.
