Set back on the right of the table, Christ, seated with the pilgrims of Emmaus, blessed the bread he was about to share with the guests. Around them, the maids are busy in kitchen. This curious composition, invented by Jacopo Bassano, dedicating the central square in the genre scene, not the religious scene, depicted in the background, in the dark. The Bassano are the inventors of this formula in which the subject becomes a pretext for the development of a secular representation. The composition was a great success with their clients and was reproduced many times in their atelier.L'original Jacopo is kept at the Louvre, but also discloses a signed copy of Jacopo and Francesco (Private Collection). This is also to Francesco Bassano that we attribute the invention of the strange prospect separating the two spaces tableau.Il is difficult to recognize the author of this table, on which several hands may have worked but it certainly comes from the workshop of Bassano.
The table included in the collection of the Countess of Kilmorey, which was put up for sale in London on 3 December 1924 (Sotheby's). Charles Brunner merchant acquired it and sold it to Charles Vincent Ocampo, March 16, 1925, for $ 5 000frs, in exchange for a presumed Portrait of Catherine de Medici, by Clouet.En 1931, Charles Vincent Ocampo donated subject to usufruct, to the City of Paris. He renounced the usufruct in 1942.
