This is a cabaret that four men and one woman gathered around a table to drink and smoke. Signed apocryphal manner, "Isaack Ostade", the picture seems to have been realized after several works of Adriaen van Ostade. The cabaret reminds paintings like "The Artist's Studio" (Dresden, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister) or "Inside a classroom" (Private Collection), in which light from a large open window hanger located on left.The the group of the three rightmost characters and the dog, is itself an exact reversal of an engraving of the artist, illustrating "the taste" of which there are many copies around the world (including potentially 10 in the collection of the Petit Palais)

The picture was presented in the collection of Charles Vincent Ocampo in Paris in the early twentieth century, with over "The Beggar at the door of the inn" (PPP02538), formerly attributed to Isaack van Ostade. In 1931, Charles Vincent Ocampo donated, subject to usufruct of his collection to the city of Paris. The usufruct lifted in 1942, the painting has come to the Petit Palais.
