The scene takes place in front of the old church of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. In the foreground, anti-religious masquerade: sansculottes donned vestments and carry a censer, a monstrance, a stick, etc.
These anti-religious masquerades were led by a minority of atheists sans culottes who caricatured offices using objects looted the church. These acts of vandalism quickly stopped because they discredit the declaration of human rights and shocked the Christian revolutionaries. The ancient church of Saint-Germain-en-Laye is identifiable thanks to Israel Silvestre engraving.
