Farmers refugees under trees during a thunderstorm are frightened by a branch that has been shattered by lightning. central motif of the composition, a woman standing holding her young child in her arms to protect. At the far left is the plain and village topped by thick clouds.
In a letter to his wife in July 1865 Jules Breton evokes a violent storm which he is a witness in the countryside of Cernay. This study oil could be the memory of this incident.
