The topics dealt with the Anselm Feuerbach respectively, represent the decisive moment of an ancient story that focuses the drama of human existence in his characters. Therefore, he was not very popular in Vienna and felt also - together with Böcklin and Hans von Marees - in opposition to the prevailing artistic creation. In the "Orpheus and Eurydice" the theme of tragic love is related to the artist Destiny: Orpheus (he wears the lyre of Apollo, recognizable by the figure of Marsyas) does not succeed overcoming of fate or of loneliness, despite all art.
