Artwork information from the museum (© - by Petit Palais - Musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris - Petit Palais - Musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris)
This graceful portrait fixed traits of the daughter of Jean-Joseph of Albenas officer in the regiment of Touraine, who distinguished himself in the War of Independence in America before settling in Toulouse. Athenais is wearing a bright dress with high waist and puffed sleeves as women wear fashionable at the end of the First Empire. Only the shortcut above the ankles reflects an adaptation to early age. She is holding a floppy hat with blue ribbons reminiscent of her dress. The oblique light illuminating from top to bottom the silhouette of the child is different from that of the conventional landscape background which frames. It is in fact in the light of the workshop where the young model took the pose.
Louis-Léopold Boilly produced a great number of portraits he accepts all genres. The length portraits on landscape background are the most sophisticated of its production appearance. With this order, Boilly is the interpreter of the growing interest that one carries to children.
