Pierre-Joseph Proudhon (1809-1865) is represented with his daughters Catherine (1850-1947) and Marcelle (deceased in 1854) in the garden of his house Rue d'Enfer in Paris. The philosopher, wearing a coat, sat on the steps of his property on which there are books and papers. His felt hat is placed further. Her daughters are beside a chair on which rests a work-box. While the youngest played with the dinette, the other, sitting at a table, decrypts an alphabet.
Proudhon was a founder of French socialism. Born in 1809 in Besançon, he became friends with Courbet during his move to Paris in 1847. There followed almost twenty years of artistic and intellectual exchange between the two men. This portrait is made after the untimely death of Proudhon in 1865 to honor the memory of the man and socialism.
