The son of a tailor, Renoir loved to depict the latest fashion trends. Here he presents a stylish woman wearing a high-collared dress, gloves, and an eye-catching hat. Despite the detailed presentation of the clothing, Renoir leaves the setting—and his sitter—largely undefined. The painting is done in a portrait format, and yet we are not sure who the woman is. Rather than a portrait of a specific person, Renoir has instead rendered a type—the modern Parisian woman.
