Gallery label: François Clouet became court painter to François I in 1540 and served as principal portraitist of the French monarchy for more than thirty years. He produced numerous drawings of members of the court, including one of François de Scepeaux (in the British Museum), upon which this portrait is based. Esteemed for both his military prowess and his loyalty to the crown, François de Scepeaux was rewarded with an appointment to the Order of St. Michael in 1552 and was made Marshal of France in 1561.
