This panel was painted in 1781 for the second Turkish room of the apartments of the comte d'Artois (later Charles X [1757-1836; r. 1824-30]) at Versailles. The eight extant panels from this room (six now in the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, and two in the Metropolitan Museum) have been attributed to Jean-Siméon Rousseau de la Rottière (1747-after 1792) and his brother Jules-Hugues Rousseau (1743-1806).
