The episode is taken from Chapter XIII of the "Acts" (verses 8-12). While in Paphos on Cyprus, preaching the word of God before the proconsul Sergius Paulus, Paul was interrupted and contradicted by the Barjésus magician (also called Elymas); he appealed to the Holy Spirit and went temporarily blind the false prophet. Following this miracle, the proconsul, was converted to Christianity.

The "mays" are the large paintings in evangelical subjects, ordered every year (between 1630 and 1707) by the corporation of Parisian goldsmiths and offered May 1 at the Notre Dame Cathedral. The final table is always kept at Notre Dame.
