Art critics slating Romako images so sharp that one wonders how he may have endured the ridicule and insult, either, especially when he suffered under the pressure of having to secure for himself and his children's existence. Romako left Vienna after the failure of his "Tegetthoff" and had to finance an auction organize his works. This was, however, due to the bad mood against him also a complete failure: He could not sell a single image. Nevertheless, he left Vienna and settled after a few detours, in Geneva down, where "The Rosenpflückerin" was born. This image is one of a set of portraits which are color akkordiert the seemingly accompanying plants, but these plants having the space give the figure and are set in close relationship with the person of the sitter. The color design is reduced, restrained and precisely by expressive: By means of color manifests a sense, an association for the person depicted. In this series of portraits and the "Portrait of Mathilde Stern" is one that is also located in a gazebo. In the genre of the portrait "Rosenpflückerin" Romako also breaks with the traditional chiaroscuro principle of portraiture, he is a bright figure against a bright background. he had already developed in Rome this painting, she makes these portraits Geneva but the rule and reversed the principle into its opposite (M. Stern: dark against light). Romako presented in his portraits of the human person at the center. Range, composition, environment, and accessories is matched perfectly to the model and the presentation of the "essence" subordinate. The characterization of the person is completed but also by a naturalism that was repugnant to the contemporary taste. Not only the psychological capture, but also the retention of the actually visible Romako was important. [Dietrun Otten, 2001]
