During the 1840s and 1850s, Apollonia Sabatier, called the "President" by Theophile Gautier, was the muse of many artists and poets - Dumas, Flaubert, Musset, Houssaye, Nerval, Meissonier, Préault, Clesinger etc. - she received in her salon Rue Frochot. Baudelaire devoted her long a secret passion, and became his lover in 1857. It became the model for the sculpture of Auguste Clésinger, "Woman bitten by a snake," scandalizes the Salon of 1847, and it appears in the table Courbet's "the artist's studio" (1855).
