The Bite of bread is the only painting by Peel for the state on the occasion of an order from the Department of Fine Arts in 1881 on the theme "The Charitée. The implementation of this large composition (National Fund contemporary art) only start after 1900 and will be completed in 1908. Ten preparatory sketches are conserved Petit Palais.
