Night view of the arc de triumph lit by torch, with the coffin of Victor Hugo presentation to the catafalque, watched after horse soldiers while crowds marched to a tribute denrier.
May 31, 1885, vigil of the funeral, the body of Victor Hugo was exposed under the Arc de Triomphe. Charles Garnier, who was entrusted with the realization of an ephemeral monument, erected a giant catafalque in front of which was deposited the coffin guarded by a dragon détachemment on horseback, carrying torches and the crowd. As one of the works commissioned by Paul Meurice for the creation of the museum, this painting was made as soon inaugural accrcohage museum in the sallle paintings on the first floor.
