From the inscription on the original frame, we know that this is a portrait of the nobleman Joris van Egmond. He found favour with Emperor Charles V and in 1535 became Bishop of Utrecht. Van Egmond was an impor-tant patron to artists, including Van Scorel, who painted his protector on a panel of exceptionally wide format.
