One of the first American artists to paint in Giverny, France, Theodore Robinson assimilated the teachings of the region’s most famous resident, Claude Monet, in his vibrant compositions. In this striking panoramic view of the French valley of Arconville, southeast of Paris, Robinson employed densely layered, broken brushwork—learned from his friend and mentor Monet—to lead the eye away from the figure of the woman, down the slope, and across the valley. Although Robinson, like the French Impressionists, here captured momentary effects such as the illusion of grass moving in the breeze, the geometric forms of the houses below add structure to the image.

Information about the print product

This artwork was created by the American painter Theodore Robinson. The version of the painting had the following size: 45,8 × 55,7 cm (18 × 21 7/8 in). Oil on canvas was used by the North American artist as the medium of the painting. The artwork has the following text as inscrption: signed, lower right: "TH. ROBINSON". Today, this artwork forms part of the Art Institute Chicago's digital art collection, which is one of the world’s great art museums, housing a collection that spans centuries and the globe. The modern art artpiece, which belongs to the public domain is provided with courtesy of Art Institute Chicago. Moreover, the artwork has the creditline: Friends of American Art Collection. In addition to this, the alignment is in landscape format and has a side ratio of 1.2 : 1, which implies that the length is 20% longer than the width. The painter Theodore Robinson was a North American artist from United States, whose style was mainly Impressionism. The American painter lived for 44 years and was born in 1852 in Irasburg, Orleans county, Vermont, United States and deceased in 1896.
