Puvis adapted this scene from an earlier mural portraying the origin of the arts in antiquity, which he made for the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyons. Instead of presenting a straightforward narrative, the current painting emphasizes a dreamy, lyrical mood. The costumes and calm, static gestures derive from ancient statuary and relief sculptures, while the minimal modeling, simplified contours, and pale, chalky colors reflect the artist’s study of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Italian frescoes. Puvis’s work inspired younger artists eager for alternatives to Impressionism, including Paul Gauguin and Georges Seurat.

Product materials you can choose

The product dropdown menu gives you the opportunity to select the size and material of your choice. We allow you to pick your favorite size and material among the following product individualization options:

  • The acrylic glass print (with real glass coating): The acrylic glass print, often labelled as a plexiglass print, will convert the original artwork into décor. The artwork will be made thanks to modern UV direct print machines. The result of this are deep, vivid colors. The great advantage of a plexiglass print is that contrasts and granular image details become recognizeable thanks to the fine tonal gradation in the picture. The real glass coating protects your selected art replica against sunlight and heat for decades.
  • Printed poster (canvas material): A poster is a UV printed sheet of cotton canvas paper with a slightly roughened surface texture. Please keep in mind, that depending on the absolute size of the poster print we add a white margin of something between 2-6cm round about the print motif, which facilitates the framing.
  • Aluminium dibond print (metal): This is a metal print manufactured on aluminium dibond with a true effect of depth. Its non-reflective surface make a modern look.
  • The canvas print: A canvas print is a printed cotton canvas mounted on a wooden frame. How can I hang a canvas on my wall? Canvas prints are relatively low in weight. That means, it is easy to hang the Canvas print without the support of additional wall-mounts. Canvas prints are suitable for all types of walls.
