The child here is probably Renoir's youngest son, Claude, at about age four, strolling with his nursemaid, Renée Jolivet. Painted in Essoyes, a small rural village where the Renoir family often spent summers (and the hometown of Renoir's wife, Aline), the large canvas straddles the categories of genre and portraiture. On the one hand, the painting presents a scene from daily life and even suggests a subtle narrative: the child has been picking flowers and seems to look down the path for more. Yet the close-up presentation of the figures, and the careful attention to facial features and clothing, place it also in the realm of portraiture. Note the careful design of the composition—the way the figures are perfectly centered and surrounded by a decorative pattern of light and shadow. When this painting was exhibited in Paris in 1906, one critic said it confirmed Renoir's evolution from an impressionist to an heir of the great European painting tradition.
