Miniature ovale in a frame of the same shape gilded copper.

Sir William Sidney Smith (Westminster, 1764 - Paris, 1840), entered the Royal Navy in 1777, was captured in 1795 and spent two years at Temple after being charged by the Admiral Hood to burn the French fleet in the port of Toulon. He led the defense of Saint Jean d'Acre against the French, forcing Bonaparte to move away from this place (1799). This famous victory went to England on a par with that Nelson.Bien delivering many battles against the French forces, it still was being Francophile and went to live in Paris with his wife after the fall of the empire. Admiral in 1821, he spent the rest of his life to caring for philanthropy and Freemasonry. He founded the Order of Knights liberators and was very active in the Knights Templar, reported resurgence soon 1805.Sidney Smith is represented here with all its military and civilian decorations - the red necklace of around Crescent -Turkish cord yellow to blue border and a knight Commander grand cross of the Swedish order of the Sword, with its plate (the top) - the blue ribbon in pink piping and plate (leftmost) of the order St. Ferdinand Sicily- barely visible, the blue ribbon of the Portuguese order of the Tower and Sword, with its plate (rightmost) - partly hidden by the yellow cord with a blue border, the plate with radiation knight Commander English order of Bath-neck, in commanderie, the cross Temple

The dating of this miniature is available with reservation. The date is truncated to the left by a burst of gouache on the last two digits. The year 1823 is advanced in comparison with an identical copy of this miniature, preserved in the British Royal Collection, signed and dated 1823.Un other "Portrait of Admiral Sidney Smith" is kept at the Grand Orient Museum in Paris signed by Eugenie Henry, later Mrs. Latil (no inventory number). This painting appears to have been made from the miniature Autissier, which it takes the features, installation and uniform covered this time of Masonic decorations. It probably situate this painting after 1838 when Sidney Smith tried to assert his authority as grand master of the Order of the Temple.
