The German landscape and decorative painter Schilbach could stay in Rome thanks to a scholarship five years. 1828, when he had already received the appointment as court theater painter in Darmstadt, he made for a long hike through Frascati, Ariccia and in the Sabine numerous landscape studies and sketches. Later he went back to them to paint from memory Italian landscapes. The view of Ariccia, a town southeast of Rome, was born in Germany. Johann Heinrich Schilbach tried to topographical accuracy. Left of the dome of the baroque church of Santa Maria della Assunta one can see the castle of Ariccia. Despite the realistic reproduced landscape view refers in its composition nor the romantic image conception of the painter, the stunning main subject, the picturesque trees in the middle and the bottom view of the city in the distance.
