Stuart's most popular portraits of Washington are the so-called Athenaeum type, of which there are as many as sixty replicas dating from the turn of the nineteenth century until the artist's death. Gilbert Stuart was a painter of American nationality, whose style was mainly Rococo. The North American painter was born in the year 1755 in North Kingstown, Washington county, Rhode Island, United States and passed away at the age of 73 in the year 1828.
